Frequently Asked Questions
|
Q. What is Charmin doing to protect the environment?
A. We have been working for many years to make products that consumers need and that work well, and to manage our offices and plants in a way that uses raw materials and energy as efficiently as possible. This is very important to us. We are committed to protecting the environment by continuing to take important steps to reduce our environmental footprint, and grow responsibly today and tomorrow.
For example, during the past three years, Charmin has reduced energy used in manufacturing by more than 15 percent (per units produced). That's enough energy to light and heat 100,000 average-sized homes per year in the U.S.
Q. Do you use pulp from certified sources?
A. Yes, we ensure that the fiber we use comes from suppliers that have had their forest management practices certified
as sustainable. That means:
- More trees are planted or regrown than used.
- The wood has been legally harvested, and our suppliers do not obtain wood from High Conservation
Value Forests.
- Steps are taken to protect water, wildlife, and ecologically and culturally unique forest areas, and this is
verified by independent third-party audits.
You can read P&G's Wood Pulp Procurement Policy on pages 28 to 30 of the 2009 P&G Sustainability Annual Report.
The P&G 2009 Sustainability Report also includes details and reports about P&G's sustainability results
and goals, including products, operations, social responsibility, and employee engagement.
Q. How is Charmin changing its products to respond to the needs of today's environment?
A. We are continually looking for ways to make our products work better, with less. For example, we offer innovative products such as Charmin Ultra Soft and Ultra Strong in Mega Rolls. With four times the
amount of paper per roll versus a regular roll, that not only means fewer changes at home, but it also reduces the use of
cardboard cores and packaging. If a million households switched from Charmin Ultra Strong or Ultra Soft Regular Roll to
Mega Roll, it would save more than 200,000 pounds of plastic packaging.
Q. Is Charmin made with recycled content?
A. The cardboard tubes are made of 100 percent recycled fiber. However, our consumers count on Charmin for its softness,
absorbency, and strength. We do not use recycled fiber in our tissue, as the process of recycling can break and damage
the fibers, which could lead to less strength, absorbency, and softness. Instead, we're focusing on using our raw
materials as efficiently as possible.
Q. What is your company's environmental plan?
A. P&G is committed to improving its sustainability results consistently and reliably over the long term. To learn more about our focus and detailed results, read P&G's 2009 Sustainability Annual Report.
